VPC 07 is a lot less picky when it comes to guest operating systems. It specifically supports Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP, Vista, and OS/2 Warp, and has predefined configurations for them. But the documentation states, "Virtual PC can run most x86 operating systems . . . in a virtual machine environment," and my experience agrees. You can run as many VMs at once as your system's memory will support.

Pressing a hotkey switches the active VM from running in a window to taking over the full screen. Once you've clicked inside a VM's window, it retains control of the mouse until you press a special key. Each guest operating system can read from any CD or DVD drive, but only one at a time can control the floppy drive. And if a VM starts using a serial or parallel port, all the others (and the host) are locked out of that port until the particular VM shuts down. Unfortunately, VPC 07 has no support for USB devices; for that, look to Parallels or VMware.

You can shut down a VM and save its state at any time. You don't get VMware's ability to restore multiple snapshots of previous states, but then, average users probably won't need to. You will find somewhat of an equivalent for VMware's "linked clone" feature: You can create a new machine that has a virtual hard drive based on that of an existing VM, but stores only the differences—Microsoft calls this a differencing disk. You might, for example, create one Windows XP installation and base several other VMs on it, but each would use a different browser. Just be sure you don't launch the base VM—any change to the base invalidates all the differencing disks.

An option enables undo disks. In this mode, at the end of each session you decide whether to keep all changes permanently, keep them provisionally, or discard them. You can also give a VM read-only access to a physical hard drive. To use this feature under Windows Vista, you must shut down VPC 07 and relaunch it by right-clicking and choosing Run as administrator.
